IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
February 22, 1989
Mr. KOLTER introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to
the Committee on Post Office and Civil Service
JOINT RESOLUTION
To designate September 1, 1989, as `National Day of Recognition of the Polish
Armed Forces of World War II'.
Whereas on the morning of September 1, 1939, the Nazi Armed Forces of the
Third Reich launched an unprovoked attack upon Poland;
Whereas more than 66,000 Polish men and women of the Polish Armed Forces were
killed, 133,700 were wounded, and more than 500,000 were taken as prisoners
of war;
Whereas invasion of Poland by Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Armed Forces
commenced World War II;
Whereas, hopelessly outnumbered in the face of the Nazi onslaught, the Polish
forces were eventually defeated;
Whereas in response to the invasion of Poland, President Franklin Roosevelt
stated in a radio address that when peace has been broken anywhere, the
peace of all countries is in danger;
Whereas the sacrifice and valor of Polish Armed Forces provided inspiration
to the Allied Armed Forces during the first and most discouraging months of
World War II;
Whereas over 100,000 men and women of the Polish Armed Forces escaped Poland
during World War II and subsequently distinguished themselves in various
campaigns against the Nazis, including the battles at Tobruk, the Falaise Gap,
and Monte Cassino; and
Whereas the people of the United States and other nations of the Allied
Powers of World War II owe gratitude to the valiant men and women of occupied
nations who fought and died in the struggle against fascism and especially to
all members of the Polish Armed Forces who served in the defense of Poland
during the Nazi invasion in 1939 and the later victories over the Nazis:
Now, therefore, be it
  Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States
  of America in Congress assembled, That September 1, 1989, is designated as
  `National Day of Recognition of the Polish Armed Forces of World War II'
  and the President of the United States is authorized and requested to issue
  a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe the
  day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
