Amends the National Trails System Act to designate the Lincoln National Historic Trail (a trail of approximately 350 miles extending from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River with an extension of the water route down the River to connect with the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail near Wood River, Illinois as a component of the National Trails System.
Designates an extension of such water route down the Sangamon River from Beardstown to Springfield for study as an addition to such System.

A BILL
To amend the National Trails System Act to designate the Lincoln
National Historic Trail as a component of the National Trails System.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. DESIGNATION.
Section 5(a) of the National Trails System Act (16 U.S.C. 1244(a))
is amended by adding the following new paragraph at the end thereof:
``( ) The Lincoln National Historic Trail, a trail of
approximately 350 miles extending from Lake Michigan to the
Mississippi River, as generally described in `The Proposal' in
the Department of the Interior report entitled `Illinois Trail,
National Trail Feasibility Study and Environmental Assessment',
dated September 1987, with an extension of the water route down
the Mississippi River to connect with the Lewis and Clark
National Historic Trail near Wood River, Illinois. A map
generally depicting the route shall be on file and available
for public inspection in the Office of the Director of the
National Park Service, Washington, District of Columbia. The
trail shall be administered by the Secretary of the
Interior.''.
SEC. 2. STUDY TRAIL.
Section 5(c) of the National Trails System Act (16 U.S.C. 1244(c))
is amended by adding the following new paragraph at the end thereof:
``( ) An extension of the water route Lincoln National
Historic Trail, down the Sangamon River from Beardstown to
Springfield.''.
