CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Commending the President for proclaiming May 6-12, 2001, as Global
Science and Technology Week.
Whereas science and technology hold the key to our future economic prosperity;
Whereas in today's era of globalization it is essential that young people have
access to high-quality science and mathematics education so that
America's workforce may continue to participate fully in the world's
high-technology marketplace and in the global scientific community;
Whereas the greatest challenges and brightest hopes our Nation faces are of
global concern and science and mathematics education is essential for
continued United States leadership in the world;
Whereas science and mathematics education are essential for continued leadership
and participation by the United States in international science
ventures, such as the Human Genome Project, which will lead to many
scientific breakthroughs and medical discoveries that will improve the
lives of United States citizens;
Whereas educational programs must find ways of exciting students about studying
science and mathematics and igniting their curiosity by drawing
attention to news-making scientific discoveries, and by emphasizing
society's increasing reliance on science and technology and the role of
science and technology in preventing human tragedies around the globe;
Whereas, because the media focus on news about breakthroughs in genetic
engineering, potential cancer drugs, and deep space probes, and
highlight breathtaking images from satellites, science and mathematics
education is needed to enable all Americans to understand and evaluate
today's headlines; and
Whereas in the 21st century, competency in science and mathematics is an
essential component of responsible citizenship: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That science and technology are important elements for our economic
well-being, and therefore the Congress commends the President in
proclaiming a Global Science and Technology Week.
