A BILL
To amend sections 562 and 563 of the Immigration Reform and Immigrant
Responsibility Act of 1996 to provide for direct Federal payment to
hospitals and emergency ambulance service providers of emergency
medical care and certain emergency ambulance services for illegal
immigrants.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the ``Illegal Immigrant Emergency Care
Reimbursement Improvement Act of 2002''.
SEC. 2. DIRECT FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR HOSPITAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE AND
EMERGENCY AMBULANCE SERVICES TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
(a) Hospital Emergency Medical Care (Section 562).--Section 562(a)
of the Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (8
U.S.C. 1369(a)) is amended by inserting ``or each such hospital or
facility'' before ``is eligible''.
(b) Emergency Ambulance Services (Section 563).--Section 563 of
such Act (8 U.S.C. 1370) is amended--
(1) by inserting ``or ambulance service providers'' after
``subdivisions of States'';
(2) by inserting ``or service provider'' after ``such a
State or subdivision'';
(3) by striking the dash after ``who'' and by striking
``(1)''; and
(4) by striking ``; and'' and paragraph (2) and inserting a
period.
