gratitude to the Honorable Bob Stump for serving the United States and
the State of Arizona with honor and distinction in his 26 years as a
Member of the House of Representatives.

Mr. Kolbe (for himself, Mr. Pastor, Mr. Hayworth, Mr. Shadegg, Mr.
Flake, Mr. Franks of Arizona, Mr. Grijalva, and Mr. Renzi) submitted
the following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the
Committee on House Administration

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Expressing profound sorrow for the death of the Honorable Bob Stump and
gratitude to the Honorable Bob Stump for serving the United States and
the State of Arizona with honor and distinction in his 26 years as a
Member of the House of Representatives.
Whereas Bob Stump dedicated his life to defending the Nation's principles of
freedom and democracy, entering the United States Navy at the age of 16
to serve as a World War II medic on the USS Tulagi from 1943 to 1946;
Whereas Bob Stump served four terms in the Arizona House of Representatives from
1959 to 1967 and five terms in the Arizona State Senate from 1967 to
1976, serving as President of the Arizona State Senate from 1975 to
1976;
Whereas this great man from Arizona possessed the spirit of the American west,
as a lifetime cotton farmer, a graduate of Tolleson High School, and a
graduate of Arizona State University;
Whereas Bob Stump served the United States and the State of Arizona with honor
and distinction in his 26 years as a Member of the United States House
of Representatives, serving as Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs
Committee and Chairman of the Armed Services Committee;
Whereas Bob Stump was instrumental in securing increased funding for the
Nation's veterans, increasing the quality of life for those men and
women who served the United States with honor and pride;
Whereas Bob Stump was a fierce advocate for constructing a World War II memorial
on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and a strong proponent of
protecting Arlington National Cemetery;
Whereas as a long time member of the House Armed Services Committee, Bob Stump
was influential in the rebuilding and strengthening of the national
defense of the United States, and was an early advocate for increased
technological advances for the Nation's military;
Whereas Bob Stump worked on a bipartisan level to secure funding for the Central
Arizona Project to ensure that Arizona could use its share of Colorado
River water;
Whereas in his lifetime, Bob Stump became known as a member of Congress who was
responsive to his constituents, hard-working, and one of the most
respected legislators of his generation; and
Whereas Bob Stump will be remembered as a man of integrity and loyalty who loved
serving his country as a soldier, public servant, and farmer, and who
was a loving husband, father, and grandfather: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That the Congress--
(1) has learned with profound sorrow of the death of the
Honorable Bob Stump on June 20, 2003, and extends condolences
to the Stump family, especially to his wife Nancy, his children
Karen, Bob, and Bruce, and his grandchildren Sara, Robert
Patrick, Britt, Morgan, and Bailey;
(2) expresses its profound gratitude to the Honorable Bob
Stump for the services that he rendered to the Nation in the
United States Navy, the Arizona State Legislature, and the
United States Congress;
(3) recognizes with respect the Honorable Bob Stump's
integrity, steadfastness, and loyalty to the United States; and
(4) directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to
transmit an enrolled copy of this Resolution to the family of
the Honorable Bob Stump.
