CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Congratulating Disneyland and the Walt Disney Company on the 50th
Anniversary of the opening of Disneyland.
Whereas Disneyland first opened its doors on July 17, 1955, in Anaheim,
California;
Whereas when Walt Disney formally dedicated Disneyland on July 17, 1955, he
stated that he hoped the park would be ``. . . a source of joy and
inspiration to all the world'';
Whereas Disneyland has grown from a single theme park with one hotel into a
full-scale resort with 2 world-class theme parks, 2,200 hotel rooms and
40 restaurant and retail locations;
Whereas Disneyland is California's number one tourist destination;
Whereas Disneyland is the leading employer in Orange County, directly employing
20,000 individuals and supporting an additional 45,700 jobs;
Whereas Disneyland generates an economic impact of $3.6 billion annually to the
Southern California economy;
Whereas Disneyland generates $722 million per year, which supports 6,000
employment opportunities and $226 million in revenue to other local
businesses;
Whereas Disneyland and its cast members provide millions of dollars of
charitable giving every year in the form of cash, in-kind services, and
volunteer services to hundreds of nonprofit groups, touching the lives
of thousands of area residents;
Whereas the success of Disneyland launched an industry and sparked an empire of
fun that now spans the globe and attracts 200 million visitors and
growing on 3 continents every year; and
Whereas the creation of Disneyland was perhaps the single greatest family
entertainment achievement of the 20th century, introducing an entirely
new concept in outdoor entertainment and establishing an icon of fun and
magic known around the world: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That Congress congratulates Disneyland and the Walt Disney Company on
the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Disneyland, ``the Happiest Place
on Earth''.
