Debbie Smith Act of 2023

This bill reauthorizes through FY2029 the Debbie Smith DNA Backlog Grant Program. The program provides grants to state and local governments to improve and expand the collection and analysis of DNA evidence, including evidence in sexual assault kits.

     To amend the DNA Analysis Backlog Elimination Act of 2000 to 
 reauthorize the Debbie Smith DNA Backlog Grant Program, and for other 
                               purposes.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

    This Act may be cited as the ``Debbie Smith Act of 2023''.

SEC. 2. REAUTHORIZATION.

    Section 2(j) of the DNA Analysis Backlog Elimination Act of 2000 
(34 U.S.C. 40701(j)) is amended by striking ``fiscal years 2019 through 
2024'' and inserting ``fiscal years 2024 through 2029''.
