Permits a Federal court, upon the recommendation of the United States prosecutor, to place persons charged with Federal crimes in programs of community supervision, where medical, vocational, and couseling services are provided.
Requires a voluntary agreement by an individual to such placement and an intelligent waiver of his sixth amendment right to a speedy trial.
Provides for the supervision by U.S. probation officers of individuals placed in community programs under thiS Act, and sets forth their responsibilities.
States that the initial period of placement shall be ninety days, with a possible extension for an additional period of nine months. Provides for the deferral of charges against an individual during a period of placement, and for the dismissal of such charges upon successful completion of an individual's period of community supervision under this Act.
