A BILL
To authorize and request the President to award the Medal of Honor to
James L. Cadigan, of Hingham, Massachusetts.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. FINDINGS.
Congress makes the following findings:
(1) On February 26, 1945, Second Lieutenant James L.
Cadigan, United States Army, was advancing on foot with the 3rd
Platoon of C Company of the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion of
the 10th Armored Division in order to secure the high ground
north of Zerf, Germany, when the platoon came under heavy enemy
fire.
(2) Lieutenant Cadigan, armed solely with his machine gun,
repeatedly risked his life for the sake of his men and
singlehandedly destroyed two enemy machinegun positions, while
killing 50 enemy soldiers and capturing 85 more.
(3) Lieutenant Cadigan's actions were credited by his
commanding officer and other witnesses with saving two platoons
from destruction and making it possible for C Company to
evacuate its wounded, renew its attack, and ultimately achieve
its objective.
(4) Lieutenant Cadigan's commanding officer recommended him
for award of the Medal of Honor for his acts of conspicuous
gallantry, but, being wounded shortly thereafter, was unable to
provide the required documentation within the time limitation
established by law for that award.
SEC. 2. AUTHORIZATION AND REQUEST FOR AWARD OF MEDAL OF HONOR.
The President is authorized and requested to award the Medal of
Honor to James L. Cadigan of Hingham, Massachusetts (notwithstanding
the time limitations specified in section 3744 of title 10, United
States Code).
